How to convert a Canva design into InDesign

Last updated June 2026 · by Kelly Fraser, maker of idmly

Canva can't export to InDesign, and the PDF it does export imports into InDesign as a flat, locked picture, not an editable layout. If your design exists as an HTML file, idmly converts that into a native, editable .idml with real text frames, named styles and editable charts.

Honest caveat: Canva won't hand you clean HTML, so this works best when your design originates as HTML. If all you have is the Canva PDF, your realistic options are placing it flat or rebuilding by hand.

This is the question with an unsatisfying-but-honest answer. Canva is built to export finished files (PDFs, PNGs), not editable source for another program. So there's no clean Canva-to-InDesign button, and anyone promising one is glossing over what you actually get back. Here's the real picture.

Why Canva won't export to InDesign

Canva exports PDF, PNG, JPG and SVG. None of these is an InDesign document. Place the PDF in InDesign and it arrives as a single flattened graphic: you can move it and scale it, but you can't edit the text, swap a font, or recolour a chart. It's a picture of your design, not the design.

What your options actually are

Canva → InDesign: the honest options
OptionWhat you getEditable in InDesign?
Place the Canva PDFOne flat, locked graphicNo
Rebuild by handA faithful InDesign file, the slow wayYes
Design as HTML → idmlyA native .idml built from the layoutFully editable

If your design is (or can become) HTML

This is where idmly fits. If the layout originated in an AI tool, a code editor, or any workflow that produces a self-contained .html file, you skip the rebuild entirely: drop the HTML into idmly, and the first two pages convert free into a native InDesign file. Real fonts, named styles, editable charts. For designs that started in Canva specifically, the practical move is to recreate them as HTML once (many people now design directly in AI tools for exactly this reason), then convert.

Frequently asked questions

Can you convert a Canva design to InDesign?
Not directly. Canva exports PDF and PNG, not .idml, and a placed PDF is a flat picture. If your design exists as HTML, idmly converts it into a native, editable .idml. If all you have is the Canva PDF, the options are placing it flat or rebuilding by hand.
Does Canva export to InDesign or IDML?
No. Canva doesn't export InDesign documents or the .idml format. The closest is a PDF, which InDesign can place but not edit.
Can I edit a Canva PDF in InDesign?
Only as a placed graphic. A PDF in InDesign is one flattened image, so the text and styles aren't editable. To edit the layout you rebuild it, or convert it from an editable source like HTML.
What's the cleanest way to get an editable InDesign file?
Start from HTML, not a PDF. If your design is or can be a self-contained HTML file, idmly converts it into a native .idml with real text frames, named styles and editable charts.
