Gamma vs idmly

Last updated October 2026 · by Kelly Fraser, maker of idmly

Gamma generates the design. idmly converts a design into InDesign. Gamma exports PDF, PNG and PowerPoint, with no InDesign or HTML export, so a Gamma deck can't go through idmly. If the file has to end up editable in InDesign, make the design as HTML and convert that.

Gamma is an AI tool for presentations, documents and web pages. idmly takes a self-contained HTML design (from Claude, ChatGPT, v0, Figma Make or your own code) and returns a native .idml: real text frames, named paragraph styles, editable vector charts. The first two pages convert free.

Same caveat as my other comparisons: I make idmly, so read this with that in mind. I checked Gamma's export help page in October 2026 and I'm describing what it lists. If that changes, tell me and I'll fix this page.

The core difference: making the design vs moving it

Gamma writes and lays out the deck for you from a prompt, and it's good at it. What it hands back is a PDF, a PNG per card, or a PowerPoint file. Its help centre covers Google Slides too, by way of uploading the PowerPoint. InDesign isn't on the list, and neither is HTML.

idmly doesn't design anything. It renders your HTML in a real browser, reads the computed layout, and writes the .idml directly. No PDF sits in the chain. That only works when there's HTML to read, which is why a Gamma deck is out of reach for it.

How to get a Gamma deck into InDesign

If the deck already exists in Gamma, these are the routes, ranked by how much of it stays editable.

Gamma to InDesign: the routes
RouteWhat you getEditable?Time
Rebuild it by handA faithful file, if you have the hoursFullyHours per deck
Export PDF or PowerPoint, run a PDF-based converterRecovered text and shapes, often fragmented; fonts can be substitutedPartlyMinutes, plus cleanup
Export PDF, place it in InDesignOne flat, locked picture per pageNoSeconds
Export PNG, place itAn image of each cardNoSeconds

For the converter route, Recosoft PDF2ID takes PDF and PowerPoint, and Markzware PDF2DTP takes PDF. Both are compared in the PDF-to-InDesign converter guide. Why the placed PDF arrives locked is covered in why a PDF imports as uneditable outlines.

If InDesign is where the file has to end up

Decide that before you generate, because it changes which AI tool you start in. Ask Claude or ChatGPT for the report, deck or one-pager as a self-contained, page-sized HTML file. Drop that into idmly and the InDesign file comes back with the structure intact, usually in under thirty seconds.

  • →Text stays as text frames you can reflow.
  • →Headings and body copy arrive as named paragraph styles.
  • →Charts are redrawn as vectors you can recolour.
  • →Fonts are bound by name, never outlined.

When Gamma is the right call

You need a deck today, you'll present it from the browser or send a PDF, and nobody downstream needs to open it in InDesign. Gamma is fast at that and idmly doesn't compete with it.

When idmly is the right call

The design has to be handed to a studio, a printer or a client team that works in the Adobe suite, and you have it (or can generate it) as HTML. Check the first two pages free, and pay $49 once if it's what you need.

Frequently asked questions

Can Gamma export to InDesign?
No. Gamma's help centre lists PDF, PNG and PowerPoint exports, with Google Slides reached by uploading the PowerPoint file. There is no InDesign, IDML or HTML export.
Can idmly convert a Gamma presentation?
No. idmly converts HTML, and Gamma does not export HTML. For a deck that already lives in Gamma, export a PDF or PowerPoint file and use a PDF-based converter such as Recosoft PDF2ID or Markzware PDF2DTP, or rebuild it by hand.
Is idmly an alternative to Gamma?
No, they do different jobs. Gamma generates presentations, documents and web pages with AI. idmly does not generate anything: it converts a finished HTML design into a native, editable InDesign .idml file.
How do I get an AI-generated design into InDesign?
Generate the design as a self-contained HTML file, which Claude, ChatGPT, v0 and Figma Make can all do, then convert the HTML to IDML with idmly. You get editable text frames, named paragraph styles and vector charts. Tools that only export PDF or PowerPoint, such as Gamma and Canva, need a PDF-based converter or a manual rebuild.
Which AI design tools work with idmly?
Any tool that hands you a self-contained .html file: Claude, ChatGPT, v0, Lovable, Bolt, Gemini and Figma Make, plus hand-coded HTML. idmly reads the rendered browser layout, so the tool that wrote the HTML does not matter.
Is idmly free?
The first two pages of any file convert free with no signup. A one-time $49 lifetime license unlocks unlimited full-document conversions on up to 10 devices. There is no subscription.
